We have reached a new digital milestone, just two months after we have launched our SINH website in German. Now it is turn for our website in Spanish. From now on the Spanish speaking architect, the dealer and construction worker is able to get to know everything about versatile sheating material made of magnesium oxide (MgO). ¡Hola, bienvenido SINH!

After the bursting of the bubble in the Spanish construction and real estate market in 2007, after 2014 recovery in sight. The construction sector in Spain is growing again. The perpective for 2017 is a growth of 3 to 4%.

In addition to the economic outlook improvement in Spain, there is increasing emphasis on cost-effective construction solutions, innovation and sustainability in the construction industry. Several concepts such as prefabricated, circular building and building energy neutral attract more and more attention. Magnesium oxide boards is a perfect fit for these developments.

SINH Building Solutions (Formerly known as Withindia) is located in Netherlands and in China. Buy cheap and waste money

Recently one of our customers drew my attention to the study “Magnesium oxide boards cause moisture damage inside facades in new Danish buildings” conducted by Kurt Kiel Overgaard Hansen, Tommy Bunch-Nielsen, Bent and Carsten Grelk Red. These authors are working at the Department of Civil Engineering, Technical University of Denmark and the Bunch Building Institute. The focus of the study was around treating the application of magnesium oxide, or shortly MgO boards in ventilated facades.

The article describes the effect of drops of saline (sodium chloride in water) (NaCl) leaked from the boards falling at screws, fittings and anchors of metal which resulted in negative impacts on the façade structure and a loss of several million Euros for the builder. The research concluded that MgO boards should not be used in ventilated façade systems and in situations where excessive humidity exists. The boards used by the Danes are dissolved by water and the drops of salt erodes metal construction materials. In the article several tests have been conducted to underpin the analyses.

Why you can not draw any generic conclusions based on this article?

The Danish investigators only refer to the sheathing board product that is used by this company. It is almost impossible to find out where this building material is purchased, as well as the composition of the boards and which quality control system is used in order to guarantee the performance.

The importance of CE-certified building materials

Our answer to this problem is a CE-certificate combined with a Declaration of Performance (DoP). The MgO board purchasing expert is aware of China’s availability of cheap and low range sheathing board products. You might come across Chinese producers who have a Quality Certificate and even a copy of a CE Certificate copied of somebody else. (Known as a Chinese Export certificate). The total expenses of European certification is more than USD 150.000. In addition, for many producers in China it is hard to comply with all requirements of CE marking. The plant of SINH (Ningbo) Construction Material Co. Ltd. is one of the few CE certified MgO board producing companies with audits of the Dutch independent organization KIWA. This voluntary CE marking ensures consistent quality that is recorded through an accredited DoP Declaration and an ETA (European Technical Assessment) by European standards. Therefore, it is of vital importance to purchase MgO boards from solid certified companies instead of going for a quick (and cheap) Alibaba deal.

The chemical composition of the board

The article starts with the basic problem of the generation of tears on the board, which results in salty water, and consequently causes corrosion of the metal parts. Although a very thorough analysis, unfortunately the research does not conclude with a solution to the problem. The professional purchaser is already aware of the problem, with the recipe of non-certified MgO building materials and the knowledge that this will bring consequential losses in the future. It is impossible to mess with recipes having CE marking accompanied by a DoP, without any consequences for the CE certification. SINH Building Solutions is fully aware of the issues relating to the leaking of salty water on boards, with the amount of chloride and saw-dust in this product. With our unique recipe, we guarantee that the SINH™ board will not show the same problems that were described in this Danish study.

Why buy cheap and waste money?

A very common filling material for MgO boards is saw dust. This is a relatively cheap filler, which also fits perfectly in dry conditions. The producer can create more margin and/or guarantee low purchasing prices for the trader if he increases the amount of wood, which is at the expense of the amount of magnesium oxide powder in the recipe. These kinds of non- certified producers fail to show concern around the integrity of the board which may swell, mold or even start to rot. The same he can do adding big particle saw dust.

Application of MgO boards in facades

A MgO board is an open material, which means it has good moisture ab- and desorption properties. The application of this material in ventilated facades, could have been correct if the chemical recipe contained the right mix of material. Above that we always recommend our customers to protect the boards for all kinds of weather conditions. Doing so the MgO board will become an underlayment board. We have found many glue- stucco- and paint companies such as: Innotec, Schönox, Ardex, Codex, Coba, Bostik, Strikolith, etc. who have tested our boards thoroughly with submersion and freezing-thawing scenarios with some suppliers even providing a warranty of 10 years.

These companies also provide working instructions for the usage of their products. Options to finish the board are: stone strips, ceramics, cork, paint or plaster work.

Willkommen SINH™! We are proud to announce that from now on our website is available in German. Guten Tag SINH™!

With this milestone we reach Europe’s largest market. It is not sufficient having a website in English and doing successful business at the same time in German speaking countries, like Germany itself, Austria and Switzerland.

After years of negative prospectives, the German construction industry is growing since 2013! And the perspective is very positive. A lot of houses and other buildings have to be modernized and renovated the coming years. Sustainability and climate neutral construction are important matters in Germany. In this field Germany is leading in Europe. To produce and transport our SINH™ MgO boards to The Netherlands, we cause only 40% of the CO2 emission of concrete/cement/gypsum boards.

About my experience of CE Certification

Withindia Building Solutions is a developer and supplier of innovative and sustainable magnesium oxide construction solutions. Furthermore we worked one and a half year on achieving CE-Certification for its core product: SINH™ board. Perhaps you might think: That takes long! Can’t CE Certification go any faster?

But I’m afraid you have to count on this kind of time laps if you want to introduce a new construction material on the European market. Particularly if you are busy with all other daily company activities.
Therefore I want to take you step by step into “my journey” of CE certification.

Step 1: the basis

First of all, everything starts with which product you want to introduce and which European standards you have to deal with. For us, this product is: SINH™ board
De base for CE-certification are the documents ETAG 18-1 (type 2, fire proof products for vertical walls) and ETAG  18-4 (type Z2, indoor use).

Step 2: European Assessment Document

The second step was to develop an European Assessment Document (EAD). We started this process in Augustus 2015 and its conclusion came in May 2016. We needed more than 70 tests in different labs to realize the EAD document. These results are registered in the EAD.

Step 3: Audits, Factory Production Control

The third step was Factory Production Control (FPC) by KIWA at our Chinese partner. For that the first audit took place in June. Subsequently not every detail was in order and a follow up audit became necessary.
This follow up audit was executed by Skype connection. A novelty for everyone. We walked through the entire production chain in China during the live connection. In practice we showed that a Skype audit works perfect, on the condition that all basic conditions are met. (like a visit at manufacturing site). All persons concerned worked in a constructive way together to meet the final result. In the end a GO for certification was given by the auditors. During the audit the open mind of KIWA regarding the use of modern communication methods has had a substantial impact on achieving this result in a reasonably short time.

Step 4: CE Certification

Our company received the CE-certificate including DoP (Declaration of Performance) on the 1st of October of 2016 of KIWA. Summarized: An excellent job!

Finaly: my experience

The entire process took us one and a half year to achieve the CE Certifacation. It was a period of “blood, sweat and tears”. The whole path took very long and was very expensive.

But why can I recommend you this process?
Not only because you comply with regulations, but also going this path will increase the quality and consistency of your final product and satisfied customers. You are in fact forced to come down to the level of operational instructions, and to describe these in your new quality management system.

I can hear you saying: once you received CE Certification you can sit and lean back on your chair… Well, let me tell you: it will be the opposite! From now on you are committed to manage high product requirements and the process to achieve it.

Personally this is not my favourite project, but on the other hand it has been very useful and a blessing for the final result of our company!

The company activities changed in India, and after starting a new business unit in China, with focus shifted to Europe the next year. A clear and logical step. The European economy is growing, exports are on the rise, and the construction industry is recovering after many years… Therefore the traffic light is GREEN! For the construction of a new Project Bungalow Park in the state of Gujarat, SINH Building Solutions teamed up with Avadh.

A company that has implemented groundbreaking projects in Amreli, Surat, Bardoli, Navsari and Ahmedabad. Avadh has a strong reputation for pioneering innovative building solutions in the design of lifestyle projects, and its quest for innovation led to the sourcing of SINH™ board for roofing underlayment for this project.
